Amazonia's future will be jeopardized by dams

(University of Arizona) The hundreds of hydroelectric dams proposed for the Amazon River Basin will cause massive environmental damage all the way from the eastern slopes of the Andes to the Atlantic Ocean. About one-third of the 428 dams are built or are under construction. The environmental effects will ramify throughout the river system and beyond. The largest river system on Earth, the Amazon River and its watershed cover 6.1 million square kilometers and includes nine countries.
