Center for Advanced Studies explores crises in Latin America -- and their solutions

(Bielefeld University) Latin America is confronted with crises - from political unrest in Venezuela, the deforestation of the Amazon, violence against women ("feminicide"), the extreme divide between rich and poor, to the threat of a wall between the USA and Mexico. How do Latin American societies cope with crises? To answer this question, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding the CALAS cooperative project with a total of 12 million euros in the six-year main phase starting in March.

Immigrant Asian American women may be at higher risk for breast cancer

(University of California - Riverside) According to the results of a new study led by a researcher from the University of California, Riverside, a subset of women living in the US may be at higher risk for breast cancer than previously observed. The study identified differences in how Asian American women experience breast cancer risk; more specifically, it found that Asian American women who had immigrated had significantly higher risk for breast cancer than their US-born counterparts.

Major genetic study confirms that many genes contribute to risk for Tourette's syndrome

(Massachusetts General Hospital) A meta-analysis of multiple studies into the genetic background of Tourette's syndrome (TS) -- a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by chronic involuntary motor and vocal tics -- finds that variants in hundreds of genes, working in combination, contribute to the development of the syndrome and suggests that Tourette's is part of a continuous spectrum of tic disorders, ranging from mild, sometimes transient tics to severe cases that can include psychiatric symptoms.
