(Cell Press) A single injection of a fragment of the longevity hormone klotho into both young and old mice improved spatial and working memory and strengthened connections between neurons in the hippocampus rapidly, and these cognitive benefits lasted for several weeks, according to a study published in Cell Reports. Short-term treatment with the klotho fragment countered deficits in mice with diseased brains. Clinical studies are needed to test whether this is safe and effective in humans.
