Caregivers of child support beneficiaries at risk for depression

(University of Johannesburg) A key finding of a study on child support grant beneficiaries and their families in South Africa shows high rates of depression among caregivers of children under 8 years, who are largely women. Higher rates of depression symptoms were evident among caregivers in urban areas compared to rural areas. Those experiencing poverty, unemployment, food scarcity, poor living conditions and those with lower levels of education were a high-risk group for symptoms of depression. Supportive interventions are proposed.
