Genes for speech may not be limited to humans

(Frontiers) Mice use language but not speech, which is thought to need biological functions particular to people. This study shows a genetic mutation in the gene FOXP2 has negative effects in the communication between mice -- like in humans. The work suggests certain molecules needed for speech played a role in vocal communication in mammals earlier in evolution, before people could talk.
