(National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs)) A paper investigating the welfare of laboratory rats is the winner of the 3Rs prize, which is awarded by the UK's National Centre for the 3Rs (NC3Rs) and sponsored by GSK. Research by Drs Joanna Makowska and Daniel Weary from the University of British Columbia, Canada, was recognized for its contributions to the 3Rs. The paper provides evidence of the importance of simple and natural behaviors such as burrowing and standing upright to laboratory rats.
