Social media tools can reinforce stigma and stereotypes

(Oregon State University) Researchers have developed new software to analyze social media comments, and used this tool in a recent study to better understand attitudes that can cause emotional pain, stigmatize people and reinforce stereotypes. In comments about Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia they found that 51 percent of tweets by private users of Twitter accounts contained stigma.
