(Medical University of South Carolina) In the April 6, 2017 issue of Cell Stem Cell, scientists at the Medical University of South Carolina report that cardiac glycosides reduce a precursor of LDL cholesterol in a drug screen of statin-resistant hypercholesterolemia. A large meta-analysis of medical records revealed that patients taking glycosides for heart failure had reductions in LDL cholesterol similar to patients taking statins. Cardiac glycosides are a potential treatment for patients with high cholesterol who don't respond to statins.
