(Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania) A meta-analysis of laboratory debunking studies examines the factors underlying effective messages to counter misinformation in news and correct "fake news." The study finds that detailed debunking messages are more effective than simply labeling information as wrong, and that debunking is more effective when an audience can be engaged in developing a counterargument.
