(HRL Laboratories) HRL Laboratories, LLC, researchers have determined how non-invasive transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) could increase associative learning. When applied to the prefrontal cortex, tDCS affected the brain widely, changing functional connectivity between areas, and accelerating learning in macaques. This confirmation potentially resolves controversy over reports claiming no effect on neuron firing rates in cadaver heads, believed to be the mechanism of interest. The HRL study confirmed faster learning regardless of neuron firing rates.
