(University of Chicago Medical Center) Patients who need frequent hospitalization account for a disproportionate amount of health care spending. In 2012, the University of Chicago Medicine began enrolling patients in a clinical trial designed to reduce frequent stays. Hospitalization rates for these patients were 15 to 22 percent lower. They also reported a better experience.
